Ketone Gummies

These gummies deliver ketone-boosting power into your day. From page 304 of my cookbook, The Keto Diet Cookbook.

This recipe uses exogenous ketones and while not required for the recipe to turn out perfectly, it’s a brilliant way to get more ketones into your body on a daily basis in a sugar-free, healthful way.

There are a lot of mixed feelings around exogenous ketone usage, and some of them are misguided. If you’ve previously supplemented with exogenous ketones and became fearful that the supplementation would stop you from fat burning, or if you’ve never heard of exogenous ketones, I’ll give you a rundown so that you can make the best possible decision for yourself once you have all the facts!

What Are Exogenous Ketones?

So first, what are exogenous ketones? Exogenous ketones are a supplement available to keto people (and hey, there’s a use for it for non-keto folks, too, that help curb cravings, reduce hunger in between meals, support energy throughout a workout, and boost brain power.

The right exogenous ketone may help you extend your fasts, reduce sugar cravings, boost your workout energy if you’ve been feeling a little flat since you went keto, help you feel what it’s like to be keto if you’re struggling to get in the groove, or boost your energy when you’re just not feeling your best.

Will they boost your body’s ability to generate ketones? My thought is no. Will they stop your body from generating it’s own ketones? From what I’ve researched, no.

Do Exogenous Ketones Pause Weight Loss?

Thinking that exogenous ketone supplementation stops weight loss is based on the following improper logic:

If you give your body exogenous ketones, MCT oil powder, or MCT oil; basically anything that stimulates ketone production or supplies it, you force your body to use the external source of fuel instead of generating them via your body fat.

The human body doesn’t work like this – your body doesn’t wait until all of the things you’ve eaten are digested before it decides to burn fat. It all can happen at the same time, and needs to.

Why Exogenous Ketones Don’t Stall Weight Loss

Your glycogen stores don’t need to be completely empty for your body to start burning fat. However, your insulin levels do need to be low and you need to avoid overeating to allow your metabolism to access fat stores. More on blood sugar regulation and how that works.

That’s why your focus should be on maintaining low blood sugar levels and periodically going without food with an intermittent fasting practice.

Since your body requires a large amount of energy to function correctly, exogenous ketones give it a chance to work through some glucose stores while also giving you sustained energy.

If you decide to supplement with exogenous ketones, there are many exogenous ketone products out there, but this one is the only one I trust.

The best way to pack exogenous ketones into your day. This recipe can be made with or without exogenous ketones, but they're great with! From page 304 of my cookbook, The Keto Diet Cookbook.
Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Have on hand your favorite silicone mold. I like to use a large silicone ice cube tray and spoon 2 tablespoons of the mixture into each cavity, which makes 8 gummies total. If you do not have a silicone mold, you can use an 8-inch (20-cm) square silicone or metal baking pan; if using a metal pan, line it with parchment paper, draping some over the sides for easy removal.
  2. Place the lemon juice, strawberries, and gelatin in a blender or food processor and pulse until smooth. Transfer the mixture to a small saucepan and set over low heat for 5 minutes, or until it becomes very liquid-y and begins to simmer.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the exogenous ketones.
  4. Divide the mixture evenly among 8 cavities of the mold or pour into the baking pan. Transfer to the fridge and allow to set for 30 minutes. If using a baking pan, cut into 8 squares.
Notes
Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

If you don’t use exogenous ketones in this recipe, simply add 2 drops of liquid stevia or 2 teaspoons of confectioners’-style erythritol in their place.
