Homemade Mini Studio

By July 21, 2015

For the past couple of days, you’ve heard me talk about the mini studio we’ve been busy making. It all began when I read Ashley’s post about creating a homemade light box. How cool? I knew though, that I would feel limited with the space in the box – I like to move around a lot as I’m taking pictures. So, we came up with the idea of making a miniature sized studio in our dinning room instead. I just took my first shots with it and I’m so impressed! What you’ll need:
  • 3 boards of MDF – we used 24 x 36 and 1/2 inch thick
  • 3 L brackets
  • 3 straight brackets
  • 34 – 5 [length] & 1/2 inch [thickness] screws
  • Drill
  • White queen sized sheet
  • White outdoor paint
  • Paint roller and tray
  • Old pants in case Kevin paints your knee…
  • 1 soft box – can be purchased on ebay for a very, very good price!

How we did it

Pictures below are taken with Kevin’s iPhone. I’m a clutz so we didn’t think it was a good idea that I handle the camera around paint and tools, food is risky enough. We pre drilled 3 MDF boards [the wood particles contain formaldehyde, so all drilling should take place outside!] We brought the boards inside and secured them with brackets and screws. Then, we painted the L shaped figure with a couple of coats of white paint just in case the color of the wood came through the backdrop sheet. Being very, very careful, we brought the structure up from the basement and placed it on our old kitchen table. It’s very heavy, so you’ll need a partner! We bought a cheap white bed sheet at Walmart and draped it over top [aka backdrop sheet]. Then we set up the soft box. And there you have it, a studio in under $40! Do you have any photography tricks?
