Kevin has turned into a dairy-free milk monster. He adds it to his ginormous bowls of protein oats, whips up 1-2 protein smoothies per day, and even drinks the stuff! Coming from a guy who used to live on frozen meals and Cherrios (with 2% milk)… we’ve come a far ways.

We used to buy two or three large case of almond milk from Costco every couple of weeks, but that practice ground to a halt when we started reading up on carrageenan.

(I wrote about our carrageenan discovery in this post, if you’re interested. The whole topic is quite controversial. I received quite a few messages from companies after posting that post, attempting to defend carrageenan and the presence of it in our food. Given the immense case against its safety, I’ve made a personal choice not to consume it. But to each their own!)

We found a couple of dairy-free milks at Superstore that didn’t have carrageenan but at the rate that Kevin goes through almond milk, we were picking up seven $5 jugs per week. I’ll let you do the math on that one :|

This conundrum called for a bit of creativity…

And? I’m pretty happy with the result. No soaking, no waiting, really easy. Kevin even made a couple of batches of his very own!

If you want to make this a lighter, everyday drinking milk, try increasing the water by 2 cups.

Easy homemade dairy-free milk made with shredded coconut.
  1. Add ingredients to the bowl of your high powered blender. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Strain mixture using a nut milk bag or a new, never-been-used seamless nylon sock.
I have heard that paint bags work well as a replacement for nut bags but that they have to be replaced every couple of times. I have had the same nut milk bag for years with no issues... so I am not sure how economical it is to use a paint bag instead.

Once you’ve made your milk and squeezed all of the liquid through your nut milk bag, you’ll be left with highly fiberous crumbles of coconut (aka coconut flour!).

You can add the crumbles to cereal, in smoothies, or dehydrate to make your very own coconut flour!

  1. Has anyone tried the boiling method? Put the coconut and the water in a pan and boil it until it is creamy/milky, then pour it through a strainer of some sort.


  2. economically speaking with the price of cocnut does this end up any less expensive ithen buying say a can of Native Forest simple organic Coconut Milk ? Im just trying to figure things out with time & money….

    • I’m not sure, I haven’t done the calculation. But this milk shouldn’t replace full-fat canned coconut milk. It’s best to be used in place of the coconut milk found in the carton.

    • If you buy coconut by bulk it is way less expensive compared to store bought. Also organic with none of the additives! I just re stocked coconut buying a case (4-24ounce packages) from Amazon for just under $20.00!!

      • Also it will only keep for about 4 days in the fridge.

  4. After you put in the fridge do you get a solid sheet of fat on the top of the jar you put in?

    • There will be some separation but you should be able to just shake it up to combine it again.

  5. Instead of purchasing canned coconut milk that I put in smoothies I decided to make my own. I blended 1/2 c shredded coconut flakes and 1 cup filtered water in a blender. I add to add some water. I then added the rest of the ingredients-berries and flaxseed. I was disappointed in the taste. The recipe for the homemade coconut milk has you blend the two ingredients and then use a nut bag to strain the liquid which I didn’t do because my friend who has a degree in nutrition suggested that I can get more fiber if I don’t strain it and one less step! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    • Karen, I recommend straining the milk. Otherwise, the texture isn’t very appealing. Hope this helps!

    • Since there are no preservatives in this, it doesn’t last quite as long as store bought coconut milk. It should be good for approx. 5-7 days, though!

  6. For the leaner version, one cup shreds to 4 cups water, do you just cut the nutritional value in half? Just an aside on the nut/painter bag…I have been making my own soy milk and filter it through a coffee filter, the non disposable kind, that just happens to fit in the top of my pitcher. I use a spoon to press the liquid out. I’ve had it for years. Works great for coconut milk straining too!
