Gluten-free + Vegan Baking Products

Out of all of the questions I receive about the ingredients I use here on HP, the most popular is;

Where can I find gluten-free, vegan carob and cocoa products?

Followed by,

What healthy sweeteners or sugars do you recommend and where can I buy them?

While I’ve managed to locate products here and there, many are either gluten-free OR vegan, sugar-reduced OR natural, or just not available internationally. Not exactly a solution I can recommend to everyone, now is it…?

When I found Chatfield’s there was a glimmer of hope. Their gluten-free, vegan carob chips, carob powder, cocoa powder, and date sugar are the stuff that dreams are made of. I made muffins, cookies, pancakes, and doughnuts with their natural products. Finally, a line of baking products I could believe in.

I was thoroughly impressed.

Then I discovered Canadians just couldn’t purchase them. Anywhere. And, Americans could, but at a pretty high price.

$7.50 for a bag of carob chips? Um I like carob, but not that much.

So frustrating.

But Panos brands; a consumer packaged goods company that manages Chatfield’s, offered to help me come up with a solution that I’m pretty excited about.

The solution

  1. I’ve never seen Chatfields before, nor have I heard of date sugar! Although based on the price, I think I might stick to my hershey’s dark cocoa powder, also pure cocoa and much cheaper! That date sugar is intriguing me though…

  2. I like the carob powder and chips. The carob chips are good by the handfull. My favorite way to use the powder to stir it in some almond milk. I have not tried baking with it though. My family can be a little picky and would be unsure of the carob in their baked goods. Thanks for the heads up on the discounts. :)

  3. Fyi, if you are gluten sensitive, chatfields will probably be ok. If you have celiacs, chatfields is NOT Gluten Free. Processed in the same facility as wheat. Chatfields, themsleves, express that they are not gluten free.

  4. Chatfield is not gluten free — their website states that they are processed in a facility with wheat. I cannot find anywhere in the United States that sells gluten free carob powder and it is very very frustrating to me as we don’t do chocolate and carob is my favorite treat. What a bummer that celiac’s can’t have carob because not one company will produce carob that is tested to be certified gluten free. I was almost thinking of starting my own company if I had the know how and the capital. You can find gluten free carob in Australia or Europe but not in the USA — what a disappointment for celiacs!!!!!!!!!
